Built to Inspire

It doesn’t get much more exciting than renovating homes with potential in stunning NSW Central Coast locations.

Renovating and home styling is a real obsession for so many Australian’s. We love watching an old outdated home transform into something special on shows like The Block.

Well, we have our own home transformation team right here on the NSW Central Coast.

Today, local businessman, Michael Baker and his team from Built to Inspire take us through a property makeover they’ve been focused on recently that helped blend a unique home into its bush setting, in Killcare.

Killcare’s Built to Inspire team are a local family-run business who specialise in high quality home and retail building solutions. Working alongside many prestige architects, Michael and his team are exceptionally skilled in ensuring a building, whether it’s a home or shop, has a connection with its surrounding and draws attention from the street.

Transforming tired houses located in lifestyle suburbs like Killcare and Copacabana, the team focuses on opening up spaces, expanding and adding value to a home while creating something unique and beautiful.

Owner Michael Baker said that he gets a buzz producing something new and different for his clients.

“I love working with a building’s structural potential. We’re able to change the look of a house completely and give it a high end feel, through some well considered structural or visual changes. Building in a coastal environment, homes here have their own character and our carpenters gain immense satisfaction using hardwood timbers, to give a home that natural finish,” he said.

An exciting example is a recent upgrade to a Killcare beach house where the Built to Inspire team gave the facade and roof of the building a complete overhaul.

The house was initially designed by a Sydney architect as a natural tree house to blend into the bush. The original owner created a contemporary holiday house using a combination of reclaimed floors, custom built cabinetry and an array of natural materials that give the illusion of living outdoors.

The house’s generous open plan living was designed to capture the ocean glimpses and breezes, whilst providing a wonderful extension to living space with the generous deck.

Built to Inspire were hired to transform the exterior, and uplift an iconic holiday home to that it better complimented the stunning bushland environment within which the home resides.

Renovated with vertical blackbutt cladding, the house on Grandview Crescent now appears at one with its surroundings. Using natural looking timber battens on the outside and a brand new flat pan and high rib roof in woodland grey, the result is an eye catching home that stands out from the norm.

“This is not your standard roof and what we have achieved really changes the look of the property. It’s the first thing you see when you walk down to the house, and it’s the start of a journey into a unique home that provides tranquility and calm to anyone that stays here,” Mr Baker said.

“The clients love it and while it’s currently a weekender for the owners, they plan to eventually make Killcare their permanent address.”

Another of Mr Baker’s recent projects includes a new shop fit out for Bouffant in Terrigal, a french inspired patisserie that serves delicious baked goods, such as croissants, donuts, tarts and danishes to enjoy with a perfectly brewed coffee.

The retail store fit out has unique external features like aluminium bronze finishes, curved joinery and internal stone benches that, again, aim to be eye catching and draw people’s attention from the street into the store.

“These projects require creative thinking and structural building expertise, but the result and value derived in terms of making your home or retail store stand out and have a key point of difference is something well worth considering,” Michael said.
